In a world of flying cars and planetary portals, Detective Gerald Bryce holds a rare power the ability to read emotions. When he discovers a suspected murderess who shares his gift, she offers the fulfillment of his deepest desires. Soon he discovers she can manipulate emotions too, controlling others even to the point of committing murder. A battle breaks out between police and all the forces she can bring to bear. The Empathic Detective A Mystery Thriller eBook Jaxon Reed

I should have read the description a bit better, instead of just remembering the bit that pertained to the title. Once it starts in on flying cars and floating clubs, it threw me a little until I reread the description! But, no matter – it was still an interesting concept, although perhaps I may have preferred having an empathic detective in the modern day, instead of a sci-fi alternate world. It seems to be that you don’t have to throw in other sci-fi elements to make the emotion-reading real (and I’m going to have an argument with myself on whether empathy on this scale is classified as sci-fi or fantasy – some assistance might be required, as some people consider such empathic abilities real even when they haven’t been scientifically proven, whilst abilities of the mind are also a magic-fantasy staple).

Ahem, anyway, arguing with myself aside, once I got into the story, written in a first-person narrative (typical detective style), I actually not only liked but quite enjoyed it. It wasn’t always concretely written, with obvious details being overlooked at times, even when mentioned. However it actually ended pretty well, well enough to make following up with the second worthwhile (which I’ve already won in the subsequent Kindle Scout campaign and was the reason for my buying this one). You can’t help but feel happy for the misjudged detective. For a short while, at least.

The Empathic Detective A Mystery Thriller eBook Jaxon Reed Reviews

The Empathic Detective (The Empathic Detective #1) by Jaxon Reed is a kindle scout book I read last week. I enjoyed the book's idea/plot. The characters were interesting and their gifts were pretty awesome. A pretty good read.
This is my first story by this author. It was well written and well edited. I read through it in one day. I look forward to the next one. Hopefully, there will be more.
This was an "OK" read. The main character was likeable....but I was not able to identify with him. It was an easy read. Some of the "Controlled Episodes" where the villain controlled other people, were a little hard to swallow. Not quite there yet.
In a world with flying cars and restaurants, a detective that feel the emotions of others is looked upon with mixed feelings by his coworkers. While they think he is a good cop with a good arrest record, they are afraid he will use his powers to discover their secrets as well. But he gets a new partener just in time for one of the hardest cases of his life. He finally meets another person with powers like his own, only hers are much stronger. She uses her powers to gain more power and doesn't care what laws she has to break to get it. Can even an empathic policeman stop her?

I read a lot of books that require a lot of suspension of disbelief. Usually, I have no problem doing that. This story gave me problems though. The world setting didn't feel real. It felt like a few sci-fi elements were thrown in but with no real reason for them. The characters also seemed to be undeveloped and one-dimensional. Frequently, their motivations were either unexplained or just not believable.

If this was a movie, it would not be a big screen blockbuster. Instead, it would be a straight to video (or cable) movie with b-list stars. Okay if you got time to kill but not great.
Reed is a very good storyteller and the empathic idea is intriguing. I was surprised, however, that the book made it through the Scout and publishing process without a more comprehensive editing. Some examples there are two 'critical storyline gaps,' multiple sentences with double-meaning structure, and a number of typos. That said, I enjoyed the story and the characters, and - having lived in Leander, Texas, for a short time - found the Austin-area setting well-presented and fun.
The beginning was somewhat slow for my liking. The main character was thoroughly explained so the reader knew enough about him to not be confused. The repetition of the main characters abilities seems like a filler for the most part and unnecessary, slightly annoying to me. The antagonist was interesting enough along with the history of harpies at the end of the book. There were a few twists but nothing that invoked a strong response until the end. I wont give away any spoilers but seems to me there is a sequel either already released or in the works? This was a typical crime novel for the most part just set way in the future.

Thank you Jaxon Reed for the gift copy of this book. Look forward to reading some of your other works.
This is a reasoned approach for a future world background. It does not play a major part of the story, but it gives new twists that keep a reader interested. I mean, a taco stand in the air and well paid detectives definitely give new deminsions (no pun intended) to the scene.

The story was interesting and well presented. The characters are great and very personable. They are people with whom you would like to spend an afternoon discussing their jobs and lives. The main character displays a lot of depth without making an issue of the "quirks".

I recommend this book and like the second book as well. I look forward to reading more from this author.
